SCHOOL: Another of Miranda's friends, and our new neighbor, has a beautiful little Montessori school in a permaculture garden where she was happy to accept the boys for the summer. This gives us some time to get work done and the boys a chance to learn some French. Fisher and Oliver's school is like a dream. There's this giant permaculture garden with several ponds, each of which has frogs and fish in it. The ponds create a sort of "island" in the middle, where trees are planted in a circle. There's a little bench in this grove of trees. When I took the boys for their first day, I just sat on the island as they would venture out further and further before coming back in for a check in. Oliver spent most of the day trying to catch a frog with a net (he was totally unphased by failure). The boys started school- a Montessori program based in a permaculture education center. I’m proud of them for braving the language barrier (none of the students...

Bonjour!

Hi Everyone, For those of you that don't know, we're in France! Specifically La Roche, Alba la Romaine in the Ardeche in the south of France. One of Whitney's best friends from childhood, Miranda, settled here after college and has been chatting about a visit for years. So when we thought about our first family trip out of the country, it seemed wise to be with friends the boys already knew and loved (Miranda and her husband, David, have spent several weeks with us over the past couple of years and we zoom with them regularly). We knew that if we were going to spend the time and money to come so far, we'd wanna dig in and stay for a while. So we rented out our Asheville house to fund out travels. Miranda and David put us in touch with their neighbors who wouldn't be living in their home this summer and voila! Our trip to France came together.  Our first flight was a breeze thanks to built in screens streaming cartoons. So much for all the activities we carefully ...

Welcome to our new Blog!

Hi Friends and Family, We've decided to start a blog where we can upload pictures and stories from our travels in France. You've probably gotten an email from us inviting you to receive email notifications when we post here. If you want to receive those, please say yes! If you want us to resend that invitation, let me know! Please feel free to share it with anyone you think would be interested in hearing more about our travels. We're not super worried about keeping things confidential - it's the internet after all. We've started putting together our first France post, but it's not quite ready. Working out the kinks of this blog first. ALSO!!! - Allen's book (PhDone) is now officially available for pre-order. He's trying REALLY hard to get it on to a best-sellers list so that it will take off on its own. To do that, we need AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE to pre-order the book.  Please don't buy multiple copies. We need as many INDIVIDUAL orders as we can...

Crocodile Farm!

Image
Today we made lemonade. Everyone was finally feeling better, but the boys couldn't go back to school because strep (even though they aren't contagious once they've started antibiotics....). They were supposed to go on a school field trip, so instead we went on a family field trip. To the crocodile farm!  We stopped at a lavender field on the way (there are loads of these all around - so cool). So many crocodiles! At one point when we were leaving a bird flew a little too close and 4 crocs all jumped up to bite it - it was very exciting!   the pink flamingos were awesome Crocodile goddesses!
